Massachusetts public charter schools take the lead with some of the highest percentages for students attending college or university in the fall of 2018-2019, ranking ahead of several traditionally prestigious districts across the state.

The Graduates Attending Institutions of Higher Education report provides information about the enrollment of Massachusetts public high school graduates into institutions of higher education.

Among some of the top schools for 2018-19 graduates attending institutions of higher education include public, private and charter schools in several regions of the state ranging from the North Shore to South Shore and Western Mass.

Prospect Hill Academy Charter was the top school for students attending college and university at a 97{462f6552b0f4ea65b6298fc393df649b8e85fbb197b4c3174346026351fdf694} success rate, according to the Department of Education. The K-12 college-preparatory public charter school is located on three campuses in Somerville and Cambridge.

Boston Preparatory Charter Public was ranked third for sending 94.8{462f6552b0f4ea65b6298fc393df649b8e85fbb197b4c3174346026351fdf694} of its students to college and university.

In the top 16{462f6552b0f4ea65b6298fc393df649b8e85fbb197b4c3174346026351fdf694} included nine public charter schools, including top-ranking schools Prospect Hill Academy Charter and Boston Preparatory Charter Public in addition to Sturgis Charter Public, Mystic Valley Regional Charter, Advanced Math and Science Academy Charter, Pioneer Charter School of Science, Hampden Charter School of Science East, and MATCH Charter Public School, according to the data.

Currently, there are 72 charter schools operating across the state, according to the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Massachusetts Charter Schools Fact Sheet. Of these schools, 22 of them are middle-high and 10 are high schools. The 2019-2020 data also cites in these charter schools, 35.3{462f6552b0f4ea65b6298fc393df649b8e85fbb197b4c3174346026351fdf694} of students spoke a first language that was not English, 13.5{462f6552b0f4ea65b6298fc393df649b8e85fbb197b4c3174346026351fdf694} were English language learners, 15.5{462f6552b0f4ea65b6298fc393df649b8e85fbb197b4c3174346026351fdf694} are special education students, and 43.3{462f6552b0f4ea65b6298fc393df649b8e85fbb197b4c3174346026351fdf694} of students are economically disadvantaged.

Additionally, the student population of charter schools proved to be diverse with 30.1{462f6552b0f4ea65b6298fc393df649b8e85fbb197b4c3174346026351fdf694} African American students compared to 9.2{462f6552b0f4ea65b6298fc393df649b8e85fbb197b4c3174346026351fdf694} at the state level and 35.1{462f6552b0f4ea65b6298fc393df649b8e85fbb197b4c3174346026351fdf694} Hispanic compared to 21.6{462f6552b0f4ea65b6298fc393df649b8e85fbb197b4c3174346026351fdf694} across the state, according to the fact sheet.

Other prestigious schools occupying the top 50{462f6552b0f4ea65b6298fc393df649b8e85fbb197b4c3174346026351fdf694} include Berlin-Boylston, Westwood, Swampscott, Westford, Masconomet, Acton-Boxoborugh, Needham, Weston, Duxbury, Marblehead and Winchester, among others. Each school district has a college student attendance rate of 87.9{462f6552b0f4ea65b6298fc393df649b8e85fbb197b4c3174346026351fdf694} and higher, according to the data.

Prior to the 2015 high school graduating class, the data refers to students attending college within 16 months of graduating high school, according to the Massachusetts Department of Education. From 2015 on, the data is also provided by high school graduates attending college by the March following their high school graduation year.

The percentages in the report are available by college attendee or high school graduate. The data is divided up by school district and includes the number of high school graduates in addition to the top 50{462f6552b0f4ea65b6298fc393df649b8e85fbb197b4c3174346026351fdf694} of students who attended college.
